In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.

The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.

Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.

However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.

Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.

This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.

To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of December 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.

Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.

Reblog to signal boost! We must force change.

REBLOG EVERYONE AND PROTEST!

I made this calendar alert for your time zone

From someone who’s survived MySpace, livejournal, deviantart, and fanfiction.nets’ content purges and bad policy updates, here’s some advice on how to get through tumblr’s recent bullshit:

– don’t knee jerk delete. I know it’s tempting to peace out immediately but hang on and do the other steps first. Out right ghosting and erasing everything is how fandoms die.

– archive everything on your blog you want to keep

– tell your followers how they can archive and keep your work too. A lot of fic and art were only saved from ff.net and lj because other people saved it first. If you’re cool with other people saving your work for them to personally keep, let them know this. You can absolutely discourage reposting but I really do highly recommend you allow people to personally save fic and art they like and are worried will disappear forever. Digital Dark Ages are a real thing.

– tell people where you’re jumping ship to. Give links. Keep that info up, even if you’ve left the site.

– go through who you follow and find out where else you can follow them. Save their work if they’ll allow it. It’s tedious as hell but if you want to keep up with people on here clicking on their page to check in is the best way to do it.

– support places like ao3. This is exactly why ao3 asks for donations a few times a year. They are a 100% anti-purging, judgement free, ad free non profit run by an elected board and protected by lawyers. Places like ao3 literally save fandom so please continue to support them and other similar archives. This is exactly why ao3 is so important.

i suggest we Immediatly bring back the way of writing present in the Declaration of Independence and Every Other pre 1900s text where we Capitalize words where We see fit, throwing commas, commas everywhere, without Vision, without Meaning, in sentences of Inordinate Length,,,,,

I propofe we not forgete the ftrange fpellings, never ftandarde between one manufcripte and anothere, wythe vowwels where there should not be.

they didn’t spell strange and other ‘s’ words with an F… that’s just the way the letter s was written then.

In genuine old-style printing it can appear that the letter f is used in place of theletter s. However, it is not the letter f, but a long form of the letter s (derived from handwriting styles), which looks very similar to f but does not have a complete cross-bar.”

Thanks, goodnight.

No worries; I know 🙂

It looks funny and tends to make modern readers try to read it that way in their heads, though, which is the entire point.

(Actually, that’s a lie; the entire point is that it looks funny)

Also it wasn’t all ‘s’s that were written that way, but I’ve forgotten the rule for it – I think plurals were excluded, though.

“strange spellings” is a reference to the fact that spelling wasn’t standardized in the early 1700s.  In fact, even in the nineteenth century, there were people whose texts we rely on today who couldn’t spell to save their lives.

I hope you do have a good night.  🙂

A Japanese Medical University Lowered Female Students’ Scores Because It Didn’t Want Too Many Women Doctors

According to Japanese media, Tokyo Medical University has allegedly been systematically decreasing the scores of female applicants since 2011, after the number of successful female applicants jumped to 40 percent in 2010.

An unnamed university official told the Yomiuri Shimbun that the university believed accepting more male students would help solve the university hospital’s doctor shortage because female doctors would inevitably drop out of the workforce after they get married and give birth to children.

The source also said that women doctors are “more unwanted” in the surgical department, where working hours are irregular and emergency operations occur.

The source added that it was commonly accepted in the surgical department that “it takes three women to serve as one man.”

Why is everyone surprised in the notes, Japan has been sexist since forever

Yeah, Japan is super sexist. When I was staying with a host family in Osaka, I went to a woman’s college for Japanese and English classes. The female students asked us questions about life in the US, and a bunch of questions were about how American men treated us. Like, what would we do if a man cut in line in front of us and then ignored us if we protested because we were women. We told them we’ve never experienced that. I don’t even know how I would react. Punch the guy in the face? I dunno. But in Japan, that happens to these women all the time. The other problem is clear to anyone who takes the Japanese subway. There are signs everywhere telling women and girls to raise their hands and shout if a guy gropes them on the train. It happens ALL THE TIME, apparently. There are other examples of sexism, of course. Like why parasite singles exist (women know that if they get married, they’ll be expected to have a kid and not have a job). Sexism in Japan is real and a lot more overt.

JK and idol culture, police not giving a shit about female victims of crimes (rape, stalking etc.), single mother being called “sluts” not matter the circumstances of their situation and being forced into poverty by refusing to give them actual well paid jobs, lack of maternity and paternity leaves, overall forcing women to stay at home by penalising two income households and giving bonuses to married men with stay at home wives, sexualization of children, especially young girls etc. These are just few of the problems that the country has

Japan is a beautiful country with a lot of culture and everything, but I hate when people just glorify it and hide behind the “cultural differences” barrier to justify its messed up shit, especially when the government itself literally does not give two shits about their citizens and problems that they face, especially for women, who apparently are treated like third class citizens.

What they did at that University should be illegal in the first place, but they are women so of course no one cares.

They can’t even admit their crimes against women in World War 2 you expect them to be enlightened now?

Now I’m curious, what’d they do?

I’m going to assume this is a serious question, because the lack of education in America (and probably most western nations) on Asian history – and ESPECIALLY the atrocities committed by Japan in WWII – is just totally shameful.

Here is the Wikipedia article on Japan’s crimes in Nanjing, China, specifically:

There was a Dose article that talked about how Japan killed more civilians than the Nazis did, but it’s been removed

I’m not tagging this because I wouldn’t even know where to begin, but here’s your content warning: all the major triggers you can think of are probably going to show up; if you have any military PTSD, or are triggered by sexual violence, be prepared for that

Edit: went and added tags, but they’re incomplete, fair warning.

I’ll just add that Japan’s denial of war crimes — and their aggressive hostility to anyone who calls them on it — continues to this day. For example, the city of Osaka recently severed a 60-year-old sister city arrangement with San Francisco because SF had the audacity to officially recognize a statue commemorating Comfort Women.

True and valuable addition – thanks!
