Because he believed in creating NEW characters, new characters who had their OWN personalities, who had their OWN stories, who had their OWN fans
He wanted to make new things, not redefine what already exists. He wanted to make NEW characters and stories that people could connect to. NEW characters who could stand on their own as opposed to just being “This character but now xyz.”
He wanted characters who had their own life and vibrancy to them.

There’s a balloon store by my work. I have never ever seen it open and I’ve lived in the same area for close to 15 years. The lights are always on but there’s never anyone inside no matter what time I go past it.
My mom has a blue leather chair that she and I call the “Blue Chair of Invisibility”. Whenever I sit in it, she can’t see me until I make a noise, even if she’s in the same room and the lights are on. This still happened even after we moved it to a different part of the room.
Terry Crews came out and admitted he had been sexually assulted by someone in the film industry, and is now being blacklisted. I have been a fan of his since Idiocracy, and will continue to support all of his work.
So when you wonder why people don’t come forward with their assults, this is why.

This misses the really powerful piece of the story: Terry Crews was the one who chose not to do the movie. One of the producers told him, essentially, that he could either do the movie and be drop the sexual assault charges, or continue with the trial and have “troubles”. Terry dropped out because he felt standing against abusers was more important than his film career.
It’s bullshit that he was threatened in the first place, of course, but his response was ballsy. I admire him for it.
