The Intimidating Teddy Bear, P1

letmehelpyouwrite:

So we all know that one person that’s intimidating as shit but
somehow is lovable and sweet? Like, when you look at them you want to
scream in fear but then when you get to know them on the inside it’s
just like “aww I love you.”

How do you put that kind of character
on paper? Well, just follow these little guidelines and you’ll be well
on your way to writing the perfect intimidating teddy bear!

So what are some reasons why people can be intimidating? There are all kinds of reasons including but no limited to:

  • height – this guy is like 6′8 and is obviously
in shape… he could probably beat my ass with both arms tied behind his
back! This is an intimidation that is completely physical but is often
seen in people that are not used to being around tall people. Often when
a person that isn’t around many tall people looks up at a tall person,
you will hear them say something like “wow you’re tall” and they’ll have
that look of fear in their eyes.
  • volume – this can go either
way. Some people are so quiet that they’re intimidating while others are
so loud and boisterous that they’re intimidating. Usually the loud
people talk a lot as well, so these things combined will make a quiet
person intimidated. In a very similar sense, a loud person may find a
soft-spoken person “unnerving” because they are used to people that are
    loud like them.
  • uniqueness/authenticity – some people are so different that
people just don’t know what to think of them, so they find them
intimidating. A lot of people are intimidated by that which they cannot
understand or comprehend, so these people would be the ones that
    intimidate those people.
  • “the biker look” – I won’t lie, I can
definitely be guilty of this one. I am not intimidated easily by any
means at all but for some reason guys with the “mean” biker look can
really intimidate me – depending on the person. Biker guys are typically
big and hairy, a look that screams “mean” to a lot of people. Also,
there is the fact that biker gangs themselves have a bad reputation, so
people that LOOK the part will particularly intimidate those that hear
about the biker gangs and are scared by the stories (even though the
person may or may not actually be part of a biker gang).
  • intelligence
    – there are two different reasons to be intimidated by an intelligent
person. Either you’re intimidated because you are not bright yourself
and are afraid of things you can’t understand (not meaning everyone that
is afraid of that which they cannot understand are dumb, but rather
meaning that the fact that you’re not as bright means that you won’t
understand the intelligent person and therefore will be “scared” of
them) OR you’re intimidated because you are an intelligent person
but they’re MORE intelligent and basically your intelligence feels
threatened by them. There could possibly be a third reason I’m not
coming up with but those are the two reasons I think of when I think
    intimidation of intelligence.
  • bitch face – we all know someone
who’s got it (hell, apparently I’ve got it). These are the people that
look like they’re mean mugging you when they’re really just looking at
you. The fact that these people “don’t look happy” can often make an
optimist or a person that sees life on the bright side uncomfortable or
    “intimidated.”

Those are some of the basic reasons why a
person might be intimidated by another person. Now, let me talk about
ways to make a seemingly intimidating person sweet or caring or “like a
teddy bear.”

…oh.

I was actually really hoping this would be about the kind of person who’s adorable and tiny and smiles a lot and you think they’re going to be really sweet and lovable and all of a sudden HOLY SHIT they take someone apart physically or with their words or their intellect and just smiiile and now you can’t see them without being terrified.  Or maybe you just find out more and more about them and all of a sudden you’re falling down a rabbit hole of AAAAAAAAA NOOO NONONONO you’re supposed to be all sweet and innocent why did this happen why do you have so many scalpels in your bedroom WHY DO YOU KNOW HOW TO STOP A PERSON’S HEART aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

c-foley:

Serious question here guys: would you read a high-fantasy queer, slice-of-life book that centred around the daily lives of queer, non-binary fae students and their teachers in a magic school? The big bad they have to face is the threat of not being able to control their magic, and though there are glimpses and hints at potential future threats, the story focuses on their training and relationships. It also follows one of the founders of the school who’s writing her memoirs in an attempt to deal with traumatic memories that have been suddenly brought back into her mind and which are causing flashbacks and some panic-attacks.

This is essentially the book I’ve written and I’ve got sequels planned and I love these characters and the community I’ve created, but I’m in the middle of heavy editing and revising and I’m at the point where I’m wondering if it’s even worth being read and I need someone to either tell me that no I’m being silly and yes it sounds like something they’d read, or yes I’m right it sounds like a waste of time. I mean, I’m still going to finish it and do something with it regardless of what people say, but it would be nice to know.

Of course!  Sounds great!

If you’re a writer and you see this post, stop what you’re doing.

WHENEVER YOU SEE THIS POST ON YOUR DASH, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WRITE ONE SENTENCE FOR YOUR CURRENT PROJECT.

Just one sentence. Stop blogging for one minute and write a single sentence. It could be dialogue, it could be a nice description of scenery, it could be a metaphor, I don’t care. The point is, do it. Then, when you finish, you can get back to blogging.

If this gets viral, you might just have your novel finished by next Tuesday.
